Make a Hama bead pattern in four steps

The Hama bead pattern maker uses one shared editor, but the best result depends on decisions you make before pressing export. Work from the finished board size backward: choose the subject, board count, colors you physically own and print scale first. The four steps below help prevent a blurred silhouette, an unbuildable palette or a guide that prints at the wrong size.

Before converting, remember that a full 29×29 board has 841 peg positions, while a compact subject may leave much of that background empty. A 58-bead-wide pattern can still cross four boards once its height is included, so width alone does not tell you the final footprint. Keep the board seams visible while sizing, check the live materials total, and save the clean source image so you can restart at another size without resampling an already converted grid.

Start with a source

Upload, paste or drop a well-lit photo, open a built-in sample, load a free pattern, or begin with a blank grid. For a photo, crop tightly around one subject and choose an image with a simple background, clear contrast and no tiny facial details; those choices reduce isolated colors and make the outline easier to recognize after conversion. For existing pixel art, use the original-size file when possible, avoid screenshots with browser chrome or compression blur, and select Pixel Art mode so the editor preserves hard edges instead of smoothing them like a photograph.

Size the project

Choose Photo or Pixel Art mode, then set the width from the physical board plan rather than from how large the preview looks on screen. Start at 29 beads for one standard square pegboard, 58 for two boards across or 87 for three; the editor calculates height from the source aspect ratio and shows the expected board coverage. If a face, letter or thin outline disappears at 29 beads, increase the width one preset at a time and watch the total bead count before committing to a larger build.

Limit and edit colors

Set a practical maximum color count first, then open My bead box and uncheck every Hama shade you do not have available. Regenerate after changing the selection so each cell remaps to a remaining reference color, then use edit mode to remove isolated pixels, strengthen outlines and keep eyes or lettering readable. Turn on color codes or symbols when neighboring shades look too similar on screen, and compare important matches with physical beads because finishes, lighting and dye lots can differ from the planning palette.

Count, label and print

Open the materials panel to review exact totals by Hama reference code and confirm that your bead box has enough of each color before placing the first row. Add coordinates, color codes, symbols and board seams to the print view, but keep only the overlays that make the guide easier to follow at its final size. Export a standard guide or true bead-size sheet, print at 100% with fit-to-page disabled, and verify the 50 mm scale bar before building directly over the paper.

For icons, names and small animals, start at 29 beads wide with a limited set of high-contrast colors. Remove unused background cells and keep narrow outlines at least one bead thick. A compact palette makes placement quicker and lets the silhouette do most of the visual work. Check letters and diagonals cell by cell because a single change can alter a small graphic.

Photo-based Hama portraits

Crop closely around the face and try 58 beads wide when eyes, glasses or markings disappear on a single board. Begin with 12–24 available shades, then merge colors that create scattered single cells. Check the result at normal viewing size before spending time on fine edits. Preserve the light-dark contrast around the eyes and outer edge before refining smoother shading.

Large multi-board Hama projects

Choose the width from the number of connected 29-peg boards and keep important features away from seams when possible. Review both width and calculated height, label the board sections, and confirm the largest color totals against your supplies. Print every sheet with the same scale setting and orientation. Building one labeled board at a time makes a large design easier to verify and assemble.
